AMC 8 (American Mathematics Contest 8)
Students in grade 8 or below
25 questions, multiple choice, 40 minutes
Middle school math. Probability, estimation, percents, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, applications, reading and interpreting graphs. None of the problems require the use of algebra or a calculator
AMC 10 Exam Syllabus and Details
AMC 8 (American Mathematics Contest 10)
Students in grade 10 or below
25 questions, multiple choice, 75 minutes
Grades 9 and 10 math. Elementary algebra; basic geometry knowledge including the Pythagorean Theorem, area and volume formulas; elementary number theory; and elementary probability. Trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry are not included
AMC 12 Exam Syllabus and Details
AMC 12 (American Mathematics Contest 12)
Students in grade 12 or below
25 questions, multiple choice, 75 minutes
All high school math. AMC 8 and AMC 10 topics, trigonometry, advanced algebra and advanced geometry. Calculus is excluded
AIME Exam Syllabus and Details
AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination)
Students in top 5% of AMC 12 or top 2.5% of AMC 10
15 questions, each answer is an integer number between 0 to 999, 3 hours
All high school math till before calculus
USAMO / USAJMO Exam Syllabus and Details
* USAMO (United States of America Mathematics Olympiad)
Students in top 270 of AMC 12, average of AMC 12 and AIME scores
* USAJMO (United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad)
Top 230 of AMC 10, average of AMC 10 and AIME scores
6 questions, essay and proof questions, two days, 9 hours
All high school math till before calculus
Don’t be mislead by the syllabus of the above exams, and think that your school taught you these topics and you know them. The Olympiad math is at a super advanced level, and this is how math is supposed to be taught! Unfortunately, even the so called best schools math teaching is mediocre at the best.
